Woodland geraniums (Geranium sylvaticum) are common in Iceland (Icelandic: blágresi) both in the wild and in gardens and there are several varieties. I have always been attracted to them for their delicate appearance and especially for their many varied shades of blue and blue-violet, which are even more numerous when seen in the light and shade of Icelandic birch woodland where they are common in the summer. I find the flowers both a challenge and rewarding to paint.
